Darlington Raceway, Darlington, SC
Westgate Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort, Myrtle Beach, SC
When it comes to NASCAR racing, one of the most difficult and exciting tracks in the nation is Darlington Raceway. Nicknamed “The Lady in Black” and “The Track Too Tough to Tame” by many NASCAR fans and drivers, Darlington offers a unique, egg-shaped design – an oval with different configurations at each end. NASCAR’s first paved superspeedway, the track was designed that way due to its proximity to a minnow pond the owner refused to relocate. As a result, the odd configuration creates a challenge for the crews to set up their cars’ handling in a way that can be effective at both ends.
Here’s your chance to experience the thrills of NASCAR’s best taking on The Track Too Tough to Tame at the Cook Out Southern 500 over Labor Day Weekend! The Southern 500 is NASCAR Cup Series stock car race that’s actually 501 miles long, and consists of 367 laps around the Darlington oval. Seating for the event is at Turn 4.
This exceptional event getaway features accommodations in a luxurious villa at Westgate Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort. Located along the beautiful Grand Strand, the resort offers a heated beachfront swimming pool, lazy river, seaside café, onsite spa and an expert on-site golf director who can help you choose between more than 100 area golf courses.
As with all Westgate Events, you’ll also be entertained with a VIP welcome party complete with dinner, open bar, prizes and a DJ, plus personal concierge services and no-hassle transportation to and from Darlington Raceway.
In addition to luxurious villa accommodations and special amenities at Westgate Resorts, you’ll enjoy VIP treatment throughout the length of your event vacation, including:
– Welcome Party with DJ, open bar, dinner and prizes

Believing that the fledgling NASCAR circuit just might catch on, Harold Brasington set out in the fall of 1949 on a project” to shape a 1-1/4 mile speedway on land that had once produced peanuts and cotton. The plan called for a true oval, but the racetrack’s design had to be changed in order to satisfy a local landowner who did not want his nearby minnow pond disturbed. As a result, the west end of the track (Turns 3 and 4) was narrowed to accommodate the fishing hole, creating Darlington’s distinctive egg-shaped design.
The 1.366-mile track offers a seating capacity of 58,000.
The first race was scheduled for Labor Day 1950, and to this day the legend of “The Track Too Tough to Tame” grows with each Labor Day Weekend race. Darlington Raceway’s historical significance, as the original paved superspeedway in NASCAR, is unparalleled. The “Lady in Black” is for stock car racing what Lambeau Field is for football and Wrigley Field for baseball, the historical venue that shaped and molded their respective sports, which fans still revere to this day.
Its place in the history of the sport sets it apart from all other tracks. It brings its fans the great racing of today mixed with the nostalgia of the past. It’s a place of history where fans reminisce about the past, but create lasting memories of the present when NASCAR roars into Darlington Raceway.
